With racing season finally underway at Vernon Downs, the facility has begun working on some major improvements to enhance the race day experience.
Owner Jeff Gural was on hand, Monday, for a ground-breaking ceremony for a new parking garage that will ease the parking situation at the track, especially in the winter. However, in an effort to compete with other resorts in the area, many other additions are expected to take place in the near future as well. “We want to add a spa attached to the hotel because I think that helps, especially with the wedding business,” said Gural. “A lot of the wedding people like the spa treatment and then I’m going to focus on making improvements to the racetrack itself.” Gural remains highly optimistic that the new additions and improvements will help Vernon Downs become a go-to destination for many in the area, but he also fears that a new proposed casino in Wilmont could take away some of the business that he is hoping to attract.
